Decorate for Halloween on a budget

25th October 2022, 3:03pm in Lifestyle by Amy Newham

31st October is creeping up fast!

Halloween candles

Alongside dressing up in costume, many people enjoy decorating their homes with traditional Halloween decorations such as skeletons, cobwebs and pumpkins.

In the UK, decorations come down from lofts in the first few weeks of October (some even as early as September!). However, if you haven’t thought about Halloween yet, decorating the home doesn’t have to frighten your bank balance!

There are hundreds of eerie-sistable Halloween décor inspiration available online. We’ve put together some low-cost and DIY decoration ideas to get you in the spooky spirit. Plus, the chance to enter our haunting Halloween competition!

Create a spooky glow with candles

If you’re looking for a relatively quick way to create a spooky atmosphere, why not decorate the window sill or dining table with some candles? Taper candlesticks or dinner candlesticks work best and are available in various colours- we recommend opting for orange and black. You can also find many low-cost gothic candlestick holders online and in stores.

Then, come the evening, you can dim the lights and let your candles glow! A surefire way to evoke a gothic vibe.

If you wish to send a candle in the post, we recommend you wrap the candle sufficiently in protective material and tissue paper to avoid damaging the surface of the candle. You can send candles with the majority of our couriers, including Parcelforce and DPD.

Switch the colour of your lightbulbs for a frightening ambience

In a similar vein, changing up your lighting is a simple and quick way of creating a haunting atmosphere. You can purchase lightbulbs in various colours; green and red are popular. If you prefer something less dramatic, you could also buy some Halloween LED lights to put up around the house.

Carve a jack-o’-lantern

Halloween pumpkin carving

Pumpkins are a must-have when it comes to Halloween. You can buy a pumpkin in the supermarket for less than £1, alongside carving kits. Get the whole family involved and create a menagerie of lanterns to greet your trick-or-treaters. However, it should go without saying that you can’t send your pumpkin in the post as it’s a perishable item!

Upcycle old cardboard boxes into frightful crafts

We’ve spoken about how you can reuse parcel boxes and packaging, so why not transform your cardboard boxes into a spooktacular garland, garden signs and tombstones?

One fun idea is cutting out a selection of Halloween silhouettes, like a skull, cat and spider. Once cut out, paint them black, let them dry and attach to the inside of the window using sticky tape. Then once the night draws in, turn on your house lights, and your cutouts will stand out. For maximum effect, you could put some colourful tissue paper behind the shapes, or add some fairy lights to make them look like they're glowing.* SpoooOOOooky!

Small and light decorations can easily be sent via a letterbox delivery service like Evri ParcelShop Postable. Parcels and packets are posted through the recipient's door so they don't even have to be in at the time of delivery.
